Unit 2-Dreams and Fantasies

Artists get inspiration from many places; the surrealists looked to their dreams and subconscious.

“Art is the only way to run away without leaving home”– Twyla Tharp

“They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams. I painted my reality.” –Frida Kahlo

How can art help us; capture our dreams and fantasies? Imagine beyond reality?

Over October break keep a journal of your dreams. see handout.

Research what Surrealism is and one surrealist artist of your choice. See handout. See Rubric

A few surrealists worth looking at; Salvador Dali, Rafal Olbinski, Kris Kuksi, Phillippe Halsman, Vladimir Kush, Michael Maschka, William Blake

http://www.surrealismnow.com/artistsatoz.html although this site does not have much factual information on the artists it is a great site to see lots of 21 century surrealists artists work. Definitely worth checking out!

Using your dreams as inspiration come up with 3 good concept sketches for a painting. Choose one of these to develop further as this will be the basis of acrylic paiting.

Canvas stretching demo- You will all stretch your own canvas as preparing the surface for painting is part of being an artist and an important skill to learn.

HOME LEARNING
Classes are suspended due to H1N1 virus. Therefore learning must continue from home. As not all of you have stretched your canvases and the materials are at school we will take a short break away from our paintings to explore some other surrealist endeavours.

As many of you found out in your research, surrealists played a lot of visual games and did free writing in order to help them with their creativity and with ideas. There are 2 parts 2 this assignment. These are Surrealist games that use both chance and subconscious to help with creativity.

A)   Use magazines or other scraps, photos and paper to create a surreal collage/imaginary scene there must be both background and something happening in the foreground. It should be in your workbook and at least the size of a magazine page. Below I have put examples by an artist who does the type of work I am looking for and one quick example done by me. I would start with the back-ground. You may also add drawn elements. Please name your piece.

B)   Use one page from Mind, life and Universe by Margulis and Punalt. Download page here. Your job is print it out,  cut and re-arrange words into a creative piece of writing of your own that you paste into your workbook. This is a found-word poem so it does not need to be in full sentences or need to rhyme. You may use no other words than are on this page. Be as creative as possible

Enjoy!

Now that you all have final sketches and have learnt to stretch your own canvases- It’s finally time to paint paint paint!

hard at work

We are using acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is an opaque medium. This means that it is not see through and you can paint over in layers until you are satisfied with your work. Acrylics also dont wash out of clothes so wear something you don’t mind getting dirty. Test you colors and experiment in your workbook.

Finnished piece and reflections are due Monday Dec 14. See rubric. See guiding questions
